ADA compliance implementation

A government agency in Maryland intended to conduct an accessibility audit of its website and remediate the issues to ensure its public-facing website complies with the latest accessibility compliance regulations.
The scope of work included:
- Perform a comprehensive accessibility audit of over 400 web pages and PDF documents.
- Provide detailed compliance reports identifying non-conformance to WCAG 2.1 AA, ADA, and Section 508.
- Execute remediation of website elements and documents to bring them into compliance.
- Implement a long-term accessibility management system to support ongoing compliance and monitoring.
Our project approach included:
- Initial Audit
- Conducted a comprehensive scan of the website using Siteimprove.
- Supplemented automated findings with manual testing, ensuring completeness and relevance.
- Verified keyboard navigation, screen reader behavior, and content hierarchy consistency.
- Reviewed over 400+ individual web pages and multiple PDF documents.
- Compliance Reporting
- Generated detailed reports documenting:
- Non-text content lacking alt text
- Improper semantic structure (e.g., heading levels, ARIA attributes)
- Color contrast issues
- PDF accessibility issues (e.g., missing tags, logical reading order)
- Prioritized findings based on user impact and severity.
- Generated detailed reports documenting:
- Remediation
- Implemented front-end fixes using HTML/CSS/JS to improve accessibility.
- Collaborated with backend Drupal developers to:
- Fix template issues
- Implement accessible widgets and forms
- Updated PDF files using accessibility tools to include:
- Proper tagging
- Descriptive titles
- Logical navigation
- Verification & Testing
- Re-ran Siteimprove tests to ensure all critical issues were resolved.
- Conducted user testing with ChromeVox to confirm screen reader usability and alignment with WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Post-Remediation Reporting
- Delivered updated compliance reports demonstrating improved accessibility scores.
- Included before-and-after comparisons to highlight progress.
